Large japanned tin and brass magic lantern.
It has a vaulted chamber
with
a single side door, fitted with a messing rimmed blue glass peephole, and a crinkle-top cowl. The optical assembly comprises a 4 inch condenser lens and a brass objective tube with good rack and pinion focusing. The drop down lens cover is engraved with 'Optimus'. Behind the hinged back door is a triple wick paraffin burning lamp with brass controls. The fuel tank is marked 'Optimus Perken Son & Co. London'. A brass plate at the front of the lantern has the same text. |

The dimensions of this beautiful piece
are 14" long x 8.5" high x 5.25" wide (35.5 x 21.5 x 13.5 cm). |

According to tradition this Optimus magic lantern was used by the British Civil Defence people to give talks on how to protect yourself in case of war. |
Optimus magic lantern/enlarging apparatus. Closely
allied with the magic lantern is the apparatus for enlarging photographs.
This lantern comprises a larger than normal condensing lens and a portrait lens which
is well suited to the work. |
