The Magic Lantern Society (based in UK) originated from an informal meeting held at Corsham Court, Wiltshire, in 1976, and was formally brought into being in January 1977 with about 25 members. The Society now has a world-wide membership of collectors, enthusiasts, students of film, visual media and popular culture, magicians, artists, performers, scientists and archival organisations from over 30 different countries. In 1983 the Society held its first International Convention, attended by over 100 members. The Conventions have been a regular feature of the Society’ s activities since then, taking place every four years and steadily growing in scope and ambition. The 10th International Convention of the Magic Lantern Society will be held at the Birmingham and Midland Institute from Friday 28th to Sunday 30th April 2017. There is a full and exciting programme in preparation which will, as always, also give members plenty of opportunity to meet new members and greet old friends. The Society publishes an occasional Journal, (New Magic Lantern Journal), and a regular quarterly Newsletter. The Society’ s Journal was launched in 1978, the first issue doubling as the catalogue of the Society’ s first exhibition, which was held at the Architectural Association in London. The 1980s also saw the publication of the Society’ s first books, its first organised visits outside Britain, and the establishment of most of its range of services offered to its members – all of which continue to form an integral and regular part of the Society’ s activities. Society meetings are held four times a year, mainly in London, and provide a friendly and informal chance for those interested in the lantern and other optical media to exchange ideas, buy and sell, or simply enjoy the show! All meetings include lectures and live magic lantern shows with original Victorian slides and equipment.
