A superb mechanical magic lantern slide from c. 1880 with three hand-painted glasses. The frame is made of mahogany and the glass slides are set within a large brass ring. The crank is made of brass and wood. When the crank is rotated the acrobat shows his stunts. |

And then his son Ricardo has to perform his tricks. This outstanding wood frame mechanical magic lantern slide measures approx. 4 1/4" x 1 7/8" (11 x 5 cm) overall with the central glass slide area being approx. 1 1/4" (3 cm) in diameter. When the handle is turned a trapeze performer rotates on a swing. This smaller size mechanical slide was produced for a children’s toy magic lantern and is very similar to those slides pictured in Bing Toy Catalogs from around the turn of the century. |

"Lord" George Sanger (23 December 1825– 28 November 1911) was an English showman and circus proprietor. Born to a showman father, he grew up working in travelling peep shows. He successfully ran shows and circuses throughout much of the nineteenth century with his brother John. He retired in 1905 and was murdered by an employee in 1911. |
