'La lanterne Magique pour les Enfants sages'. French children's book by Susanne Jung. Printed on the presses of Gaston Maillet & Cie, Imp., Saint Ouen, (Seine) and edited by Librairie Gründ, 1947. The front page displays the Lapierre lantern 'Lampascope Carré' and every page inside depicts a magic lantern projection or presents a story as a series of slides. Dans un Grenier Aujourd'hui Jeudi, Alain, Marie-Jeanne et Dominique jouent dans le grenier de Grand-maman. Comme c'est curieux un grenier! Il y a un tas de choses hors d'usages, des vases brisés, des jouets cassés, un vieux parapluie tout fané, des livres mangés par les rats, et par là-dessus une poussière.... (In the attic. Today, Thursday, the children play in grandmothers attic. They find there a lot of scrap like broken vases, damaged toys, an old umbrella with faded colours, books that are gnawed at by the rats and a lot of dust all over.....)


		La joie et le bonheur des enfants. (Joy and happiness of the children) No edition date was printed, but there is a hand writing with 1904 on the front page. Chapter 12 contains two illustrations depicting a magic lantern.

Alphabet de la Poupée (The Doll's Alphabet): early 20th C. book without printing date. One page contains a magic lantern projection for the letter "L", represented by a "Lougre" (Lugger).

	Le petit inventeur (The little inventor). Weekly magazine for children. Front page of the September 29 issue, 1925, containing an article about a coloured shadow show.
	La Lanterne Magique. A book of poetry by Maurice Carême. Only the front cover and title are interesting for the magic lantern lover. 3rd edition 1954, printed in Belgium.

Nos petits Aieux. (Our little ancestors) No printed date but from the very early 20th century. Chapters are varied related to everyday life during the good old days. Contains one chapter about the magic lantern (La lanterne Magique).

	La Lanterne Magique de Spiridion. par E.Maison. French edition of Frederick Warne’s 1890 English language movable book - The Magic Lantern – Struwwelpeter (Slovenly Peter). Publisher: A. Capendu, Paris.

First and only known French edition. Corresponds to first 1890 English edition in that later English editions had either fewer movable plates or no text. The book contains 6 pages of text and 8 movable plates with turning discs behind a round hole for the magic lantern to create up to 34 different pictures; [14] pp. Movable book expert Theo Gielen in the Volume 5, Number 3 – September 1997 edition of Movable Stationary: “With the same title of The Magic Lantern Struwwelpeter, Warne and Co. published in 1896 a simplified edition of the earlier book (1890). The moveable part was reduced to only 1 wheel, built in the front cover of the book and showing only 4 pictures of the girl who played with fire; the number of stories included was also reduced to 12. From this edition appeared a Dutch edition with the literally translated title De Tooverlantaarn, published in 1897 by Campagne & Zoon in Amsterdam. At the latest in 1900, but undated, the 8 pages with the embedded wheels known from the 1890 edition, were used again by Warne & Co. for a third version of The Magic Lantern Struwwelpeter. Printed without text this time, the cover reads "Printed and made in Bavaria." There was also the Dutch edition of 'The Magic Lantern', 'De Tooverlantaarn', (J. Vlieger) telling the story of the Dutch equivalent of Slovenly Peter, Piet de Smeerpoes. This Dutch edition has no text, similar to the third English edition published around 1900. But copies of this edition are extremely scarce, as are all these Warne editions.” Mr. Gielen also mentioned a Russian edition with the title Steka Rastrepka (Slovenly little Steven) published in 1898 in Moscow and St. Petersburg. No mention was made in the article about a French edition. Indeed, before this copy turned up, we were unaware that a French edition had ever been made.

La Chanson des Joujoux, published ca. 1900 in France. As the title says, this book presents original songs and poems that are devoted to various children's toys. There are many chapters, one of them with a song devoted to the magic lantern.

Adrien Marie's exquisite plates were reproduced by Quantin, an important Parisian firm specializing in high-quality colour printing.

Jules Jouy's lovely book of songs about children's toys includes one about the pleasure of filling the dark with images of favourite characters from children's books. They dance within the magic circle projected by the lantern. Among them the commedia del’arte characters Pierrot and Harlequin, Petit Poucet and the Giant, Cinderella and her Prince, Puss in Boots, Riquet with the Tuft and other famous characters from Perrault's fairy tales.

Pictures of an itinerant showman with a monkey feature in many engravings and books from the 18th century onwards. In the illustrations in this book, the monkey is carrying and using a now very collectable Lapierre lantern, in the style known as ‘Carre’.


Born in Paris on March 5, 1931, the son of Greek immigrants, Frédéric Othon Théodore Aristidès, alias Fred, began his career as a strip cartoonist in his early twenties Fred's most famous creation, Philémon was created in 1965, in a 15-page story intended for the Franco-Belgian comics magazine Spirou, which ultimately passed on it. In 1980, he was awarded the Grand Prix de la ville at the seventh Angoulême International Comics Festival. In 1994 he deserved the Alph'Art for the best album. He died in 2013 at the age of 82 in Paris and was buried at the Cimetière Parisien de Pantin.	La Magique Lanterne Magique was published in 1983 by Imagerie Pellerin.
