Congratulations.

Ed. Liesegang was a German family involved in the manufacture, development and sales of magic lanterns, slides and photographic apparatus. The still existing firm was founded in 1854. This marvellous glass motto slide is numbered #1. It is titled 'Wir gratulieren'. Congratulations. Congratulations for what? The girl holding the paper with the text 'zum Geburtstag' gives the solution.... For your Birthday.

1-9. Nine beautiful motto slides made by the famous manufacturer Scott & Van Altena. They measure 4" by 3 1/4" and the edge of the slide reads "Scott & Van Altena, 6 East 39th ST NYC".

Funny motto slide made by the American makers of singalong slides John Duer Scott and Edward Van Altena: 'Please don't spit on the floor'. The added text 'Remember the Johntown Flood' must be intended as irony for it refers to a great disaster.

On May 31, 1889, a neglected dam and a phenomenal storm led to a catastrophe in which 2,209 people died.
It was the worst flood to hit the U.S. in the 19th century. Sixteen hundred homes were destroyed, 17 million dollars in property damage was done, and 4 square miles (10 km2) of downtown Johnstown were completely destroyed. Clean-up operations continued for years.

The slide also shows the address of the company, 59 Pearl Street New York.

The hand crank rotates a pair circular rings in opposite directions on each side of the holder. Each ring holds a circular piece of decorated, rotating glass. Both sides have a spring clip to hold the glass in place. Slides with a circular motif can be inserted into a centre slot on top and remain stationary. As an example two hand painted motto slides. One wishes "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year", the other reads "Good Night". The size of the wood frame is 7" wide x 4" high x 11/16" thick (17.7 cm x 10 cm x 1.8 cm). The glass slides are 3-1/4" (8.2 cm) square.
Chromatrope with 2 hand-painted exchangeable glass slides.
