Harry geeft drie cent per dag uit aan bier. Via een preek die hij op een openluchtbijeenkomst hoort, besluit hij de belofte te ondertekenen. Korte tijd daarna is zijn vrouw verrast als de molenaar langskomt met een zak meel, waarvan zij beweert dat het niet voor haar is. De arme vrouw is nog perplexer als er een man arriveert met een ton kolen. Even later komt haar man binnen en legt uit dat de kolen en het meel het resultaat zijn van het feit dat hij drie cent per dag heeft bespaard. Mark Guy Pearse was een Cornish Methodist-prediker, docent en auteur die in het laatste kwart van de 19e eeuw en het eerste van de 20e een begrip was in heel Groot-Brittannië en daarbuiten.
